A sectional door can only be operated when there is a balance between the weight of the door leaf and a the spring force of the spring package. This allows the relatively heavy door leaf to be easily pulled open and closed without any problems. When the spring package is balanced, the overhead door can be opened in any position without falling shut. Without springs, there is the problem that the entire weight of the door leaf would have to be lifted when opening and closing. Accidental release would be problematic, as the door would slam shut immediately. Therefore, for safety and comfort reasons, all Hörmann sectional doors are equipped with springs for force equalisation.
Hörmann series 20 and 30 were supplied with so-called torsion springs. The same torsion springs are still used today in larger sectional doors with N, L or H fittings. In contrast, the mostly smaller to medium-sized doors with tension spring fittings have tension spring packages. The type 1 and 2 Hörmann tension spring packs offered here are only suitable as replacement parts for these doors with Z hardware. You can tell from the mounting position of the springs whether you have spring packs or torsion springs on your garage door. With tension spring packages, these are located vertically to the right and left of the door leaf. Torsion springs, on the other hand, are mounted horizontally at the top of the door frame. Please note that the replacement spring offered here cannot be used to replace a Hörmann torsion spring.
When and how should a tension spring assembly be replaced?
Hörmann tension spring assemblies are designed to withstand the daily stresses of door operation for as long as possible. It should not be forgotten that spring assemblies are wear parts. Depending on the intensity of use of the door, the spring will break after a few years. Since your sectional door will no longer be balanced at that point, the spring package will have to be replaced as soon as possible. An unbalanced door is not only virtually impossible to operate, it also causes excessive wear on the operator when using a garage door operator and causes the operator to break down sooner. replacing it with a new set of tension springs is therefore unavoidable.
With Hörmann sectional doors, care must be taken to ensure that the spring force is exactly matched to the respective weight of the door leaf. It should be avoided to fit springs that are too weak or too strong. The easiest way to select the right spring is to look at the numbering and number of spring strands in the package. All Hörmann tension spring packages feature a three-digit number engraved into the metal of the roller bracket. In addition, the packages are differentiated into type 1 with one strand of springs and type 2 with two strands. We at roller shutterparts.co.uk generally recommend replacing not only the broken spring but also the supposedly intact spring assembly. As this is also subjected to similar loads, it cannot be ruled out that it will break in the near future. For doors with Z-rail fittings, you will need double tension spring packages to replace them on both sides.
